SAN ANTONIO –   A local school district is apologizing after an apparent incident of racism at a boys high school basketball game this past weekend.

When the final whistle blew Saturday, Alamo Heights celebrated a convincing victory over San Antonio Edison.  . .  it was just after the trophy presentation when the coach was not proud of the chant coming from Alamo Heights fans.

“USA, USA, USA,” they chanted. San Antonio Independent School District officials took the chant as a racial insult to a school with all minority players from a school with mostly white ones.

Ruby Arredondo and Forest Lebaron are seniors at Edison and Julian Castellano is a junior.

“I was very surprised,” Castellano said. “Very appalled.”

“They didn’t really have any class,” Arredondo said.    here

If you’re not aware, San Antonio is in Texas, United States of America.  It’s not some border town, on which the U.S. recently performed a secret coup d’état and absconded with Mexican citizenry.  It’s been part of Texas, a bona fided American territory, since 1836.  So, hearing sports fans yelling “USA! USA! USA!” shouldn’t be met with angst, trepidation . . . nor be called “racist”.

I’ve attended and see, several basketball and football games, where the students from an opposing team proudly waved the Mexican flag, yelled “via la Mexico” and other “incendiary” comments without being called “racists”.  I’ve read high school students demanding kids wearing USA flag t-shirts on “cindo de mayo” (a non official Mexican non holiday) was racist and forbidden.

What has a nation come too, when being proud of being American, of singing the Star Spangled Banner, of yelling “USA! USA! USA!” is racism and bigotry?

I’ll opening state, if you’re “proud” of your other than American heritage, yippy yippy … yawn.  This is America.  American first – including pride of our country, pride of our military, pride of our flag, our heritage, our language.  If you find that offensive or racist, do us the glorious favor of leaving . . .  or shutting up.  Your choice.  But don’t you dare condemn American or Americans with your asinine bigotry.

**UPDATE:  The opposing school attendees were the first ones to start calling the other students, “whitey”.  So, who exactly is it, that has the serious problem and owes and apology?
